Planning a trip to Swakopmund in January? January in Swakopmund is about 20°C during the day. That’s warm but not hot. The ocean water is cold – only 19°C. Swimming isn’t comfortable even though it’s summer.
Why So Many People Come
January is busy. Really busy. People come from South Africa and other parts of Namibia. But they don’t come for the beach. They come because it’s cooler here. Other places in Namibia are super hot in January – like 40°C hot. So Swakopmund feels nice.
The Weather
Sometimes it rains in the afternoon. Not a lot. Just short rain. The sun is out most of the day – maybe 8 hours. It feels a bit sticky because of humidity.
Should You Go in January?
If you’re already in Namibia in January, sure. Stay 2 or 3 days. The town is pretty. Old German buildings. Good cafes. Desert meets ocean. It looks nice.
But if you can pick when to go, don’t pick January. Other months are way better. Less people. Cheaper prices. February is a bit better than January but still busy.
Some Quick Tips
Drive slow if you’re going to Swakopmund. The road gets foggy near Walvis Bay. Morning and evening fog is really bad. Keep your lights on so other cars see you.
Bring cash with you. Some shops don’t take cards. Cash is easier for small things and tips.
My Real Take
January has okay weather. Activities are fun. But it’s the most expensive time all year. And too crowded.
Only go in January if you’re already in Namibia then. Don’t plan your whole trip just for January. You’ll spend more money and see more crowds.
Pick another month if you can. You’ll save money. You’ll enjoy it more. Less stress, less people, better experience.
