Swakopmund is a charming coastal town with a cool climate that offers a refreshing break from the inland desert heat. It is located halfway along Namibia’s long Atlantic coastline.
With its fresh sea air and coastal atmosphere, Swakopmund could easily resemble a town along the North Sea. While visiting, make time to explore the nearby desert park to see the ancient two-leaved welwitschia plants and large colonies of Cape fur seals. If you love birdwatching, visit the Walvis Bay Lagoon, a world-famous wetland that is home to about 80% of southern Africa’s flamingos and 70% of the world’s chestnut-banded plovers.
A large number of Swakopmund residents still speak German. The town was founded in 1892 as the main harbor for German South-West Africa, and much of its colonial charm remains. With its traditional pastry shops and old-style buildings, Swakopmund feels like a small piece of Germany by the sea. It is also a great stopover point when traveling between Namibia’s northern and southern regions.
For travelers who enjoy self-drive adventures, Namibia is an excellent destination. Swakopmund is about 400 kilometers from Sossusvlei, and the five-hour drive passes through changing desert landscapes. Remember to stop for a photo at the Tropic of Capricorn sign. The town is also well connected to Windhoek by smooth tarmac roads, about 360 kilometers away.
Regular weekly departures operate between Windhoek and Swakopmund, making it easy to reach the town. These trips are suitable for friends, couples, and solo travelers, with several options to match different comfort levels and schedules. Tours lasting from three to twelve days often include Swakopmund in their itineraries.
Like many towns in Namibia, Swakopmund does not have public transport. However, the city is small enough to explore on foot. Most attractions and services are located downtown. Finding a taxi in the evening can be difficult, especially on Saturdays after 7 PM, but once you get one, the fares are similar to those in Windhoek. A trip to Walvis Bay usually costs no more than N$40.
