The Namibian seaside town of Swakopmund is known as the adventure hub of the country. It is a popular holiday destination because of its unique mix of desert, sea, and German colonial buildings from the 19th century. The town lies where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Namib Desert.
Adventure Activities in Swakopmund
- Sandboarding and quad biking: Just outside town, you can ride up and down the sand dunes for an exciting experience. You can also take a combination tour. Join a 4×4 or walking tour across the desert to see special animals that live there, such as the sidewinder snake, Palmato gecko, and different types of spiders and beetles.
- Skydiving, desert flights, and hot-air ballooning: For the ultimate adventure, try a tandem skydive with wide views of the desert and the ocean. You can also take a scenic flight or a hot-air balloon ride to enjoy the beautiful views of the Moon Landscape and Welwitschia Plains.
- Camel rides and marine trips: Take a guided camel ride into the desert and enjoy the calm surroundings. Go on a marine cruise in nearby Walvis Bay lagoon to see seal colonies, dolphins, pelicans, and sometimes whales or leatherback turtles. You can also kayak in the lagoon to get closer to the seals or try beach fishing along the coast.
- Town exploration: Walk around the town to see the old German buildings such as the Altes Gefängnis (old prison), Hohenzollernhaus, and Woermannhaus, which now serves as a public library. The town’s German history is still clear in its street names and culture. Visit the Mondesa township on a guided tour to learn about local life.
- Museums and attractions: Visit the Swakopmund Museum, the largest private museum in Namibia, to learn about the country’s nature, people, and culture. Take a walk along the old jetty to enjoy views of the Atlantic Ocean.
- Kristall Galerie and Welwitschia plant: Stop by the Kristall Galerie to see the largest quartz crystal cluster in the world along with other interesting minerals. You can also drive out to the protected area where the ancient Welwitschia Mirabilis plant grows. This plant can live for more than a thousand years.
The best time to visit Swakopmund is during the dry season, which is ideal for outdoor activities and wildlife viewing. From October to April, it is the wet season, which can be hot and muddy.
