Kayaking in Swakopmund

Kayaking in Swakopmund

You can go kayaking in Swakopmund and it’s really fun. The tour happens at Walvis Bay Lagoon. It takes about 30 minutes to drive there from town. You get to paddle with seals and sometimes dolphins too.

How the Tour Works

Tours start at 7:30 in the morning. You need to wake up early but it’s worth it. The water is calm in the morning. Your guide picks you up and drives to Pelican Point. This is a long strip of sand that goes into the water. The drive is nice. You see salt pans and birds along the way.

When you reach Pelican Point, you get your kayak. They give you waterproof clothes to wear. The water is cold so you need them. You can choose a single kayak or share a double one with someone. Don’t worry if you never kayaked before. It’s easy to learn.

Playing with Seals

Here’s the best part. Seals swim right up to you. They come really close to your kayak. These seals are playful and curious. They jump in and out of the water. Sometimes they splash you. It sounds scary but it’s not. The seals are friendly. They just want to check you out.

You might see dolphins too. Two types live here. They swim past your kayak. Watching dolphins from a kayak feels special. You’re down at water level with them.

What Else You See

There are so many birds here. Big pelicans fly above you. Lots of other birds walk in the shallow water looking for food. This place is important for birds. They come from far away to feed here.

Good Times to Go

You can kayak all year. Winter is from April to September. Many people like winter because the weather is good. Summer has more birds. The water stays cold all year. That’s why they give you special clothes.

What to Take With You

Bring sunscreen. The sun is strong even when it’s cloudy. Take a waterproof case if you want photos. Wear warm clothes in layers. Mornings are cold. The tour gives you drinks and snacks after you finish paddling.

How Long It Takes

The whole thing takes 5 hours. But you only paddle for 2 or 3 hours. The rest is driving time and having snacks. Groups are small. Usually 2 to 12 people go together. This makes it nice and quiet.

Who Can Do This

Anyone can kayak here. Families go. Couples go. People traveling alone go too. You don’t need to be strong or athletic. The water is calm and safe.

After kayaking, lots of people go do desert stuff. There’s plenty to see around here. You’ll remember paddling with those seals for a long time.
