Karakulia Weavers

Karakulia Weavers

Karakulia Weavers makes handmade carpets and rugs in Swakopmund. They have been doing this work for more than 30 years. Everything comes from traditional looms and karakul sheep wool.

What They Make

The workers weave everything by hand on old-style looms. They use wool from karakul sheep. These sheep live well in Namibia’s desert weather. The wool is strong and lasts a long time. Natural wool colors are brown, black, white, and gray. They can dye the wool if you want different colors.

You can choose from African designs, Namibian landscapes, or modern patterns. They have designs ready to buy or you can create your own design. Many people send photos or drawings. The weavers turn these ideas into rugs or wall hangings.

Watching the Work

You can walk through the workshop and watch people weave all day. The workers show you raw wool. They explain how they dye it. They show you how weaving works. When you see the whole process from sheep to finished carpet you understand how much work goes into it.

Several weavers work on different projects at the same time. You can touch the materials. You can ask questions. The people who work here like talking about their craft.

Custom Orders

This is what makes Karakulia special. They will make anything you want. The store has photo books full of designs they made for past customers. You can see landscapes, pets, and company logos. The manager helps you plan exactly what you want. The price is reasonable.
