Swakopmund has one big mall and a few smaller shopping centers. The malls are not huge but they have everything you need.
Platz am Meer Waterfront
This is the main shopping mall in Swakopmund. They opened it in 2016. The mall sits right next to the ocean which is better than shopping far from the beach. More than 70 stores are inside. You can shop at Woolworths, Edgars, Checkers, and Dis-Chem. The mall sells clothes, groceries, medicine, and electronics all in one place.
You can eat at Mug & Bean, Milky Lane, and Spur. Some restaurants have ocean views which makes lunch nicer. The mall has a CNA bookstore if you need something to read.
There is a play area for kids. Parents can shop while their children play. A small boat harbor and walking path are near the mall. You will find plenty of parking spaces. The mall layout is simple so you won’t get lost.
Banks and ATMs are all over the building. The mall uses natural air flow so it doesn’t feel closed in. You walk from the ocean breeze into the shops. This feels better than regular mall air conditioning.
Why This Mall is Different
Most malls don’t have ocean views. You can take breaks and watch the waves between stores. The mall has local brands and international brands. The location near the ocean makes it worth visiting even if you don’t buy much.
Natural light comes in through windows everywhere. The design feels open instead of closed like some malls. You can walk to this mall from most hotels in town.
Ocean View Shopping Centre
This is a smaller shopping area for local people. It has a pharmacy, supermarket, hairdresser, and ATMs. The place is clean and safe. Parking is good. Prices are higher than bigger stores but you pay for convenience when you just need basic things.
When Shops Are Open
Most stores open around 9 in the morning. They close at 7 at night on weekdays. Saturday hours are about the same but some stores close earlier. Not many shops open on Sunday but big supermarkets stay open.
Finding Local Crafts
Platz am Meer has some craft shops like Crafted Namibia. But if you want authentic souvenir shopping you should go to the craft markets and specialty stores in town. They have better selection than the mall.
The mall gives you modern shopping with a coastal location. You can buy groceries, replace things you forgot, or just browse while looking at the ocean. The mall is not huge compared to malls in big cities but it works well for a beach town in Namibia.
