Hot air ballooning over the Namib Desert is peaceful and beautiful. You float silently above dunes watching the sunrise. It’s completely different from other desert activities.
How It Works
You meet before sunrise. The company picks you up from your Swakopmund hotel and drives to the launch site in the desert.
You watch them inflate the balloon. The burners make loud noises as hot air fills it. Then you climb into the basket. Usually 6 to 8 people fit. The pilot controls the burners and you lift off smoothly.
The Flight
Flights last 45 minutes to an hour. You go as high as 3500 feet. The pilot changes altitude throughout. Sometimes you fly low over dunes. Other times you go high for wide views.
It’s incredibly quiet. No engine noise. Just the occasional burner blast. You hear the wind.
The desert looks amazing from above. Dunes create patterns everywhere. Colors change as sun rises. Purple turns to pink to orange to gold.
Where You Go
Wind decides your direction. The pilot can’t steer like a plane. You drift with the wind. Every flight is different.
Most flights stay around the Rossing Mountain area. You might see the Moon Landscape below. Sometimes you float over Namib dunes. Spitzkoppe mountain is often visible far away.
What to Wear
Dress in layers. Early morning is cold but burners overhead get warm. Wear closed shoes, not sandals. You’ll stand the whole time.
A hat helps as burners make your head warm. Bring your camera but hold it tight.
Safety
Hot air ballooning is very safe. Pilots are fully licensed. Equipment gets checked regularly. Companies follow Namibia’s Civil Aviation Authority rules.
Pilots won’t fly in bad weather. Wind, rain, or storms mean cancellations. Safety comes first.
Requirements
You must be at least 10 years old. Kids under 16 need an adult. You must see over the basket edge and adopt landing position.
Landing position means bending knees and holding the basket. Pilots show you before landing. Weight limit is 120 kilograms per person.
Cost
Balloon rides cost N$4000 to N$5500 per person. This includes pickup, flight, breakfast, and certificate. The price is high because balloons are expensive to operate.
Booking
Flights happen year round but book up fast. Reserve at least a few days ahead. Peak season needs more advance booking.
The company confirms your flight the evening before after checking the weather. Bad conditions mean rescheduling.
Best Season
Any time works. Winter months from May to September have more stable weather and less cancellations. Summer flights happen in the early morning when it is still cool.
After floating peacefully over the desert, some visitors enjoy the thrill of scenic plane flights for a faster paced aerial adventure.
