Walvis Bay Namibia Trip Guide – Lagoon, Dunes & More

Walvis Bay Namibia Trip Guide - Lagoon, Dunes & More

Walvis Bay sits on Namibia’s coast where you get desert dunes meeting the Atlantic Ocean. Most people come here for the flamingos and the crazy sand dunes at Sandwich Harbour. The town works as a good base for wildlife tours and water sports. Here’s what you need to know before you go.

Top Things to Do in Walvis Bay Namibia

See Thousands of Flamingos at the Lagoon

Walvis Bay lagoon has over 250,000 birds when it’s hot. You’ll see flamingos everywhere. They just stand there in the water all day eating. They don’t nest here or anything like that.

Get there early morning. That’s when the photos look best. These birds eat a lot – about one kilogram each day.  You can get pretty close to them without scaring them off.

The Pink Salt Pans

The salt works in Walvis Bay make the water turn pink and orange. It happens because of the algae growing in the salt pans. Just drive by on the main road and pull over anywhere to take photos. The colors look unreal but they’re natural.

Sandwich Harbour – Where Dunes Meet Ocean

Sandwich Harbour is about 60 kilometers south of town. Big sand dunes drop right into the Atlantic Ocean here. Regular cars can’t make it through the deep sand.

You need to join a tour. It takes about 4 hours. Morning ones leave at 8:00 AM. Afternoon ones go at 1:30 PM.  Most tours run about 4 hours total. The Namib Desert literally meets the sea at this spot. Your guide will drive straight up the dunes and back down. Some tours give you lunch with oysters and wine on the beach.

Other things to do include:

  • Sandboarding: Basically surfing down sand dunes on a board. Companies set you up with gear and show you how.
  • Kite surfing: Afternoons get really windy here which is perfect for kite surfing. Places offer lessons if you haven’t done it before.
  • Fishing: Try shore angling from the beach or book a boat from the harbor. Local fishermen know where the fish actually are.
  • Wildlife tours: Boats take you out to see Cape fur seals, dolphins, and pelicans. Local guides know when and where to find them.

When to Visit

Winter runs from April to September. You’ll see way more flamingos during these months and get clear skies. Summer is warmer but still good for visiting.

Cruise Stop at Walvis Bay Port

Cruise ships stop here regularly. The port sits right in town. Takes about 15 minutes to walk to the waterfront. You can book tours through your ship or find local operators when you dock.

Where to Eat

Lyon des Sables is supposed to be one of Namibia’s best restaurants. They cook fresh fish and seafood. It’s right in Walvis Bay and you can make a reservation.

Important Tips

  • Book your wildlife tours and Sandwich Harbour trips early because winter season fills up fast.
  • Ocean tides affect access to Sandwich Harbour. Morning trips usually work out better.
  • Bring a jacket because ocean wind gets cold even in summer.
  • Wear sunscreen since the sun here is strong even when it doesn’t feel hot.

Plan Your Walvis Bay Trip Now

Two or three days in Walvis Bay is plenty to see everything. You get flamingos, dunes, and ocean all together. Bring your camera for the pink salt pans and bird colonies. The desert views here are way bigger than you’d expect from a small coastal town.
