May is when winter starts in Swakopmund. Days warm up to 23°C (73°F) and nights drop to 18°C (64°F). Rain almost never happens in May. The ocean water stays around 17°C (63°F), which is too cold for swimming.
May is very quiet with hardly any tourists around. Some travelers stop here on their way to Etosha National Park for safaris. Hotels drop their prices and you can walk into restaurants without waiting. You can book things last minute without problems.
The rain just stopped so plants still look green and fresh. Sky stays cloudless and blue with lots of sunshine. Mornings start cool and foggy from the ocean air. By afternoon it warms up nicely. Pack both a jacket and shorts because temperature changes during the day.
Quad biking works great because groups are smaller now. Guides have time to actually talk to you and answer questions. Sandboarding down the dunes is more fun when you’re not waiting behind crowds.
Skydiving gives you clear views of the desert meeting the ocean. You can visit the seal colony at Cape Cross without fighting other tourists. Walking around the German buildings feels relaxed instead of rushed.
Tours charge less money than they do in summer. A hotel room that cost $120 in January now goes for $70-80. You can book activities the day before instead of weeks ahead.
The air gets really clean after the rain ends. The desert looks beautiful with green plants still growing. Your photos turn out better without people in the background.
Nights get cold so bring warm clothes. The beach isn’t enjoyable because water is freezing and wind blows hard. Skip May if you came for beach time.
May starts the best season for visiting Swakopmund. Good weather, low prices, and almost no crowds. Swakopmund in June is similar but slightly colder. May beats summer by being cheaper, emptier, and having better weather. It’s warmer than July or August too.
