The adventure begins a few kilometers outside the coastal town of Swakopmund. On arrival at our camel station, our friendly guides will welcome you and introduce you to our calm, well-trained camels. These gentle animals, often called the “ships of the desert,” are perfectly adapted to life in this harsh environment and have been trusted companions of travelers for centuries. A short safety briefing will be given to explain how to mount and ride the camel, followed by a simple demonstration before you start your journey.
Once you are seated on your camel, you will experience one of the oldest and most natural forms of desert transport used by nomads, traders, and explorers. The guided route follows the dry Swakop River bed, an area full of contrast and quiet beauty. Although the river is dry most of the year, it supports many forms of life. You may see tall camel thorn trees, the hardy dollar bush, and perhaps a jackal in the distance or a desert bird calling through the valley. Your guide will share interesting stories about the region’s history, wildlife, and geology along the way.
Halfway through the journey, we stop at a scenic dune viewpoint to enjoy the desert panorama. From here, you can admire the golden sand dunes and the Atlantic Ocean in the distance – a perfect spot for photos, especially when the sunlight changes the color of the dunes and the shadows move gently across the sand.
The ride back is calm and peaceful, allowing you to reflect on the unique experience.
